MELISSA, TX - Reed Greer, the current Melissa Youth Sports Association President and a volunteer fireman in Melissa, received 661 votes and 55.64% of the total vote count, adding the title Mayor-Elect to his name on Saturday evening. With 50.5% of Melissa registered voters going to the polls during the election incumbent Mayor David Dorman received 415 votes and challenger Micki Jobson finished third with 112 votes, behin Greer's 661 votes. In his successful bid for mayor Saturday, Greer had nearly the unanimous support of members of the Melissa Volunteer Fire Department and strong support from MYSA parents with young children. In the 8 day early voting period, Greer received more votes than Dorman and Jobson combined and on Saturday, repeated the feat again cruising to victory. When contacted Sunday evening, Greer commented "I look forward to this opportunity with open eyes and an open mind to the challenges that our city faces. In this global economy, Melissa is encountering the same difficulties other Collin County and regional cities are seeing. We are going to focus on enhancing the quality of life for the residents of Melissa. This path will create a positive energy making Melissa a magnet for those seeking something better for their family and commercial interest alike. With the help of the City Council, Melissa will flourish and be a leader during the economic revival. This won’t be easy, so plan on rolling your sleeves up." |

MELISSA, TX - With signs on every corner, postcards hitting mailboxes, full page newspaper ads and candidate's meet and greets, the price of being a politician in Melissa went to a new level during this election. MELISSA, TX - Melissa voters sent the Pro-Liquor forces in Melissa a message from the polls Saturday and it was a simple two letter message, NO. After narrowly losing by 13 votes in November 2008, an energized Pro-Liquor group of individuals thought they would finally prevail in this election, only to lose for the fourth time in four years. Early voting results had the Pro-liquor forces in the race, trailing 262 to 348 against liquor, but Melissa voters showing up on Saturday extended the lead and put the daggar in the heart of Liquor sales in Melissa, by defeating the Liquor Option 705 Against to 490 For. The 59% vote against Liquor, was a shock to Liquor forces who had built a campaign about the economic benefits liquor sales would have on boosting Melissa's sagging economy. During the final weeks of the campaign a small group of Melissa voters began an email campaign and disputed those facts. Their main opposition, however was not the economics of the issue but the simple fact that they did not want to live in a community where liquor stores would be popping up. As usual in every liquor campaign anonymous letters began to appear in the closing weeks, sources indicate those letters have been forwarded to the Texas Ethics Commission as violations of Texas election statutes.

ANNA, Texas – Texas Star Bank in Anna has yet to see a big rush in people looking to get $1 bills, but if Pastor Andrew Werley of First Baptist Church of Anna’s message from last Sunday rings true in the hearts and minds of his congregation, there will be soon.
Werley, author of the book Epic Marriage: Every Marriage has a Purpose, Discover Yours, is in the middle of the sermon series “Conflict and Marriage.” Over the past few weeks, he has covered the topics “Who’s Winning” and “Money Bouts.” This Sunday, he will tackle the issue of parenting, but this past Sunday is the message that has people around Anna talking. |
